Transatlantic Cities Network

 GMF's Comparative Domestic Policy program (CDP) works to build and nurture a Transatlantic Cities Network of civic leaders, experts and practitioners from core cities in the United States and Europe.  The Network's main focus is to share innovative approaches to challenges affecting cities and regions.  By partnering with community foundations, think tanks and major European and American foundations, and by taking advantage of GMF's extensive networks on both sides of the Atlantic the CDP program:

  • Exposes civic leaders to alternative approaches to urban and regional challenges;
  • Provides a forum for brainstorming and networking among leaders in European and American cities and regions;
  • Encourages an active exchange of information and best practices on pressing societal challenges that are applicable beyond the local level; and
  • Informs national policy makers and practitioners of innovative approaches to local and regional policy challenges.

Additionally, GMF is implementing a crosscutting communications strategy including policy briefs, press briefings, and a comprehensive website, to disseminate findings and lessons learned to a broad public in Europe and the United States.  Importantly, as a central tenet throughout, the program fosters the development of professional relationships among European and American leaders in these fields that could potentially lead to immediate and long-term collaborations. These leaders will serve as Transatlantic Cities Network Representatives in conjunction to an Advisory Committee of experts.

Participating cities in the Transatlantic Cities Network (TCN) were selected for their regional and economic significance, and are cities whose successes and challenges in urban policy present the potential for valuable exchange and learning.  They are also generally places of significant past investment by GMF through its fellowship programs and grant making.
