Douglas Davidson, Joseph Wood join GMF as Fellows December 12, 2008
Douglas Davidson and Joseph Wood have joined GMF as distinguished visiting fellow and senior resident fellow, respectively. Davidson, previously head of the Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), will focus his efforts on issues related to Wider Europe and the Balkans in particular. Wood, former White House deputy assistant for National Security Affairs to U.S. Vice President Richard Cheney, will focus on European affairs and the transatlantic alliance.
GMF selects 53 American Marshall Memorial Fellows for 2009 December 5, 2008
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) announced today that 53 emerging American leaders representing 15 states and the District of Columbia have been awarded the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) for 2009. During the 24-day traveling program, fellows will develop extensive knowledge of political, economic, and social institutions and issues facing the United States and Europe.
Sean Mulvaney named Director of GMF’s Economic Policy Program December 2, 2008
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) announces today that Sean Mulvaney has been named director of GMF’s Economic Policy Program. Mulvaney, who starts today, will oversee the Program’s grantmaking, research, and convening activities in the areas of international trade, agriculture, biofuels, and development assistance.
Asmus awarded Italian Merit November 30, 2008
On June 2, the Italian government decorated Dr. Ronald Asmus, executive director of the Transatlantic Center and strategic planning at The German Marshall Fund of the United States, with the Capo dell'Ordine Al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.
GMF-funded study on Europe's coming demographics challenges published November 30, 2008
Nicholas Eberstadt and Hans Groth's Unlocking the Value of Health: Europe’s Coming Demographic Challenge, With Special Focus on Potentialities for Germany has been released in German and is launched in English here. Eberstadt and Groth say there are opportunities to arise from the challenges of a graying European population.
A new survey released November 17, shows that that 50% of Americans and 47% of Europeans think immigration is more of a problem than an opportunity, but a closer look shows nuanced views of immigration and integration on both sides of the Atlantic and marked differences within Europe. Heumann, Knorn join GMF as Transatlantic Fellows October 20, 2008
Hans-Dieter Heumann and Till Knorn have joined the German Marshall Fund (GMF) as transatlantic fellows. Heumann, previously minister and head of the Political Department at the German Embassy in Washington, DC, will research the foreign policy of former German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher as well as study transatlantic relations, Russia, and France. Knorn, currently on leave from the German Foreign Service, will be observing the U.S. presidential election.
Transatlantic Academy announces first group of Fellows October 14, 2008

Former Pentagon Official Daniel P. Fata joins GMF as a Transatlantic Fellow October 8, 2008
GMF announces today that Daniel P. Fata, former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy, will join GMF as a non-resident transatlantic fellow. At GMF, Fata will work on issues related to NATO, the Balkans, and wider Europe.
John Richardson named Brussels Forum Director September 15, 2008
Former EU Ambassador John Richardson has been named the director of Brussels Forum, the German Marshall Fund's annual high-level transatlantic conference. In this newly created role, Richardson will be responsible for the day-to-day planning and running of Brussels Forum.

Özgür Ünlühisarcikli Named Director of GMF's Ankara Office September 3, 2008
Özgür Ünlühisarcikli has been named the Ankara office director of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) and will start on November 1, 2008. Ünlühisarcikli will be responsible for GMF's ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between Turkey, Europe, and the United States.

Francois Lafond Named Director of GMF's Paris Office June 30, 2008
Francois Lafond, a think tank veteran and former government adviser, has been named the Paris office director of The German Marshall Fund of the United States and will begin on July 15. Most recently, Lafond was a special adviser of the Italian Minister for Regional Affairs and Local Autonomies, responsible for international relations of the think tank Glocus in Rome, and associate professor at the Centre for European Studies of Sciences-Po Paris.

New Climate & Energy Program to facilitate U.S.-EU dialogues on climate policy June 3, 2008

Converting forest and grassland to cropland adds previously unforeseen greenhouse gas emissions to the cost of biofuels, new study says February 7, 2008
A study published on February 7, 2008 by Science magazine and Tim Searchinger, a GMF transatlantic fellow, finds that biofuels that use cropland are likely to increase greenhouse gases because previous analyses of biofuels ignored a crucial factor - the use of land. Most prior studies have found that substituting biofuels for gasoline will reduce greenhouse gases because biofuels sequester carbon through the growth of the feedstock. However, these analyses have failed to count the carbon emissions that occur as forests and grasslands are converted to new cropland for biofuel production.
Central Asia: U.S. Bases and Democratization January 3, 2008
Alexander Cooley, the recipient of a research grant from GMF in 2005, was recently published in Orbis, a journal featuring in depth articles on American foreign policy and national security. Cooley used the GMF support to help write the piece, entitled, "Central Asia: U.S. Bases and Democratization," which focuses on democratization efforts in the region and U.S. military bases in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
Condoleezza Rice: An American Life January 2, 2008
Elisabeth Bumiller, a GMF Transatlantic Fellow during 2007, has recently released her biography of the current U.S. Secretary of State entitled, “Condoleezza Rice: An American Life.” Bumiller, who covered the White House for the New York Times from 2001 to 2006, relied on 10 interviews with Rice and more than 150 interviews with officials close to the secretary to create a compelling overview of Rice’s views on foreign policy, terrorism and emerging global threats, and her relationship with the Bush administration.
