Grantmaking Printer-Friendly Version

Grantmaking is one of GMF's core missions, and through this process, GMF supports a wide range of institutions and individuals working on transatlantic policy issues.  GMF awards grants primarily through five major grantmaking programs -- Transatlantic Network Building, Transatlantic Policy Research, Academic Policy Research Conferences, Immigration and Integration Key Institutions, the Balkan Trust for Democracy, the Black Sea Trust, and GMF’s Economics program.

Transatlantic Network Building, Transatlantic Policy Research, and the Immigration and Integration Key Institutions are by invitation only.

Transatlantic Network Building
GMF remains committed to supporting a wide network of organizations that encourage dialogue and network building between Americans and Europeans. These grants will support ongoing lecture or seminar series, as well as recurrent small conferences targeting specific populations, with an emphasis on transatlantic issues.

Transatlantic Policy Research
These grants support think tanks and policy institutions conducting research that challenges and fosters policy debate through fieldwork, collaborative conferences, and/or publications. Proposals should be sustained in nature, motivated by a clear long-term agenda, and designed to have a positive impact on public policy development. Proposals should address key foreign policy issues and global challenges facing the transatlantic community.

Academic Policy Research Conferences
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) suspended its Research Fellowship Program in 2007.

Balkan Trust for Democracy
The Balkan Trust for Democracy (BTD) is a 10-year, $30 million grantmaking initiative that supports good governance in Southeastern Europe. A project of the German Marshall Fund in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the BTD was established in 2003 and structured to allow both European and U.S. partners to join the effort to strengthen transatlantic cooperation in the Balkans.

Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation
A public-private partnership modeled on the successful Balkan Trust for Democracy (BTD), the Black Sea Trust (BST) works in collaboration with a range of donors to provide grants to indigenous organizations working to foster and strengthen regional cooperation, civil society, and democratic foundations. BST will be operated as a 10-year initiative, though GMF remains open to considering a longer-term effort.

Economics
Through its grantmaking, GMF's Economics program supports a wide range of institutions and individuals working on various economic, trade, agriculture, and development issues.
